Police in Kyiv detained a 20-year-old mechanician from a tram depot after he took a reserve tram from depot territory and drove it along a service route toward Boryspilska metro, Glavcom reports citing Kyiv police. The depot dispatcher alerted officers after noticing the vehicle was missing.
Staff were only able to stop the tram after switching off the overhead contact network; police then arrested the man. A breathalyzer test showed 1.41‰. During questioning he told officers he had taken the tram because he likes riding that type of transport.
Investigators have notified the suspect of suspicion under the article for unlawful seizure of a vehicle; the offence carries up to five years' imprisonment. Glavcom notes a January 2026 case in Kyiv when a drunk man stole a bus and caused a crash.
