Goodreads now allows users to rate books with quarter- and half-star precision — for example 3.25, 3.5, 3.75 or 4.5 out of 5. The company announced the feature on October 5, 2026; it is live on the Goodreads website and in the newest iOS and Android app releases.

Existing whole-star ratings will not be converted automatically, but any user can edit past ratings. To change a score, open the book’s page on Goodreads and select the new value on the star scale.

Goodreads notes that finer-grained ratings could affect average scores and help the platform distinguish books with similar means or refine recommendations. The network, founded in 2006, reports up to 20 million monthly visitors.
