Photographs and social posts last week prompted protests after crews began clearing a green park strip along Teremkivska Street for a reserve heat pipeline. Activists and residents reported police removing people from the site; images circulated showing partly felled trees and officers carrying demonstrators out of the zone.
City authorities and the Kyiv city administration say the corridor is needed as a resilience measure: Cabinet permission in March and an inspection dated 18 March 2026 underpin the project. The reporting cites a municipal figure of 606 trees slated for full removal, 54 planned for transplanting, and 45 old oaks between about 70 and 120 years old among those marked for cutting. Officials point to an eight-million-hryvnia design process begun in 2015–2017 and finalized in 2023.
Environmental experts and park staff warn the strip shelters protected species such as bats and the stag beetle. Construction was suspended until at least 12 August, and a meeting between officials and the community is set for 11 August at the Holosiivskyi district administration; activists have called for further demonstrations.
