Kyiv’s Department of Territorial Control has estimated about 20,000 illegally installed garages located on residential courtyard land across the city, department director Mykhailo Budilov told reporters. The department says it is carrying out systematic inspections and removals to clear self‑placed structures from communal yard space.
As an example, officials conducted an extraordinary inspection of a garage cooperative at Teremky in Holosiivskyi district after local residents requested checks related to construction of a heating pipeline and preservation of trees. The site originally had more than 100 metal garages; inspectors now count roughly 60 remaining, some rebuilt with concrete walls.
Budilov said nearly 20 garage owners at that site have tried to register property rights — in some cases allegedly through dubious notaries — which complicates enforcement and will be handled separately. He confirmed the city will continue large‑scale demolition and clearance of illegal courtyard garages across Kyiv.
The report also notes a related local controversy over tree felling in Holosiivskyi park tied to heating‑works preparation, which has led residents to block equipment and raise complaints with the city.
