Kyiv authorities inspected the Dnipro within city limits after recent reports of the river taking on a greenish hue and foam forming near shorelines. The Department of Environmental Protection and Climate Adaptation of the Kyiv City State Administration and the municipal utility Pleso collected samples and sent them to the municipal chemical laboratory for detailed analysis.
Officials explained the colour change as a classic algal “bloom” — a rapid multiplication of microscopic algae and cyanobacteria. They cited prolonged heat, high water temperature, weak current and excess phosphorus and nitrogen as the main contributing factors. Foam visible at the banks is likely from decomposing algae and organic material whipped by wind and waves; it does not yet indicate chemical pollution. Kyiv has notified the State Water Agency and the Basin Water Resources Management of the Middle Dnipro to coordinate monitoring across the basin and says it will inform the public if laboratory tests find dangerous substances.
