Vyshhorod appears in sources from 946 as a princely residence and was later known as the burial place of Saints Boris and Hlib; archaeological remains of its fortified settlement survive. Vasylkiv is associated with Volodymyr the Great and a defensive fortress in the 11th century. The Boryspil area shows up in chronicles under names tied to the Alta River in 1015, and Bila Tserkva began as the town of Yuriev, founded by Yaroslav in 1032 and named for a white stone church.
