Kyiv city says 544 traffic-light fixtures — more than 73% of the total — can operate without mains power after reserve systems were fitted. The program is in its third stage; LiFePO4 batteries can power a signal for up to 24 hours and 24 more backup cabinets are due next month. Battery-backed signals help keep junctions organised during outages; the upgrades focus first on major interchanges, schools and complex crossings across Kyiv.

Kyiv’s traffic management service reports that 544 traffic-light objects — over 73% of the city’s signals — can now run autonomously during power cuts thanks to newly installed reserve power systems. The city is continuing a multi-stage modernisation programme and is currently on the third stage, equipping controlled pedestrian crossings and intersections with moderate traffic volumes.

City crews use lithium-iron-phosphate (LiFePO4) battery systems. According to the operator, a fully charged unit can power a traffic-light object for up to 24 hours. The published operating-temperature ranges note charging is permitted from 0°C up to about +45–50°C, with discharge possible from −20°C to +60°C; the report also states charging at temperatures below 0°C is not categorically forbidden.

Officials say another 24 reserve-power cabinets are scheduled for installation next month as the programme expands across Kyiv’s districts.
