Pereiaslav council allocates ₴200,000 for new shelter enclosures AI

Pereiaslav city council voted on 20 August to amend its 2021–2026 stray-animal programme and direct ₴200,000 toward building additional enclosures at the local animal shelter. Officials said the shelter is overcrowded and blamed rising numbers of abandoned dogs, including animals left after the Sunday market. The funding aims to relieve an overcrowded local shelter; councilors say the weekly Sunday market has become a recurring source of new stray dogs.

On 20 August Pereiaslav city councilors approved changes to the city’s Program for regulating the number of stray animals for 2021–2026, allocating ₴200,000 for construction of new enclosures at the municipal animal shelter. The motion passed with 19 votes in favor.

Deputy mayor Tetyana Kondratenko told councilors the proposed amendments concern financing the new enclosures. She cited input from Tetyana Chebotar, head of the local NGO Into Good Hands (U dobri ruki), who said animals at the shelter are being fed but the facility lacks space. Kondratenko and Chebotar both pointed to citizen irresponsibility and an influx of dogs connected to the Sunday market as drivers of the overcrowding.

The decision reallocates existing programme funds to expand shelter capacity; Proslav reported the council discussion and vote.
