Finland helps Kyiv expand air-quality sensor network AI

Kyiv has begun a large-scale upgrade of its air-quality monitoring with Finnish financial, technical and expert support, Znaj.ua reports (citing NMIU). The project will add sensors across the city, install software to identify pollution sources, and change data updates from daily to hourly. Denser monitoring and hourly updates will give Kyiv residents faster, location-specific air-quality information and earlier warnings about fires or industrial emissions.

Znaj.ua, citing the NMIU, reports that Kyiv has launched a major modernization of its air-quality monitoring system with support from Finland. Finnish partners are reported to provide financial, technical and expert assistance and to help adapt equipment that is already used in Helsinki.

Planned work includes expanding the city’s network of sensors for 24/7 observation and introducing specialized software to aggregate sensor data and help identify pollution sources. The coverage is currently limited, and the upgrade is expected to move data updates from once a day to hourly.

Responsibility for implementation is assigned to Kyiv’s municipal environmental services in cooperation with international experts. Residents can already view air-quality information in the Kyiv Digital app and on the city administration’s environmental monitoring page; the upgraded system is reported to add earlier alerts for events such as fires or industrial releases.
