Six new ground crossings to duplicate underground routes at Bessarabska Square AI

Kyiv City State Administration will reorganize pedestrian traffic around Bessarabska Square in the near future, adding six new surface crosswalks that will mirror existing underground passages and rebuilding two crossings. Accessibility upgrades include traffic and pedestrian lights, lowered curbs, tactile strips and audible-call buttons. This central change will let people cross at street level near Khreshchatyk, Arena City and Bessarabsky Market — useful for anyone avoiding stairs or underground passages.

The Kyiv City State Administration (KMDA) has announced a reorganization of pedestrian routes around Bessarabska Square that will add six new surface crosswalks duplicating existing underground passages running through the Metrograd shopping centre, and will reconstruct two current crossings. KMDA deputy head Konstantyn Usov said works will begin in the near future.

New crossings will run across Taras Shevchenko Boulevard, Bessarabskiy proyizd, Velyka Vasylkivska and Baseina streets. The project includes installing traffic and pedestrian signals, lowering curbs for people with reduced mobility, and adding tactile strips and audible-call buttons for pedestrians with visual impairments.

Planned changes on Bessarabskiy proyizd include a surface crossing along Baseina with an added sidewalk on the Arena City side to create a safe route between Lesi Ukrainky Street, Khreshchatyk and Shevchenko Boulevard. The scheme also foresees redistributed vehicle lanes, regulated access to an underground car park, adjacent bicycle crossings, and a dedicated parking zone for drivers with disabilities between the market and Arena City.
