Bessarabska Square to Get Six New Ground‑Level Pedestrian Crossings AI

Kyiv city officials will replace underground walkways around Bessarabska Square with six new surface pedestrian crossings and reconstruct two existing ones. KMDA deputy Kostyantyn Usov says work will begin soon; crossings will include traffic lights, lowered curbs, tactile paving and sound buttons. This will create a continuous, barrier‑free route across central streets — reducing the need to descend into the Metrogorod underpasses near Khreshchatyk.

Kyiv authorities announced a reorganisation of pedestrian movement around Bessarabska Square that will duplicate the existing underground passages (including those through the Metrogorod shopping centre) with surface crossings. The KMDA deputy head Kostyantyn Usov said the works will start in the near future.

In total the project provides six new ground‑level crossings and the reconstruction of two existing ones across Taras Shevchenko Boulevard, Bessarabskiy proyizd, Velyka Vasylkivska and Baseyna streets. New crossings will be equipped with traffic and pedestrian lights, lowered curbs, tactile paving and sound‑signal buttons for people with visual impairments. Along Baseyna, planners will add an extra sidewalk by Arena City and reallocate traffic lanes with a regulated entrance to the underground parking.

Planned changes also include a parking area with designated disabled spaces between the market and Arena City and bicycle crossings adjacent to the pedestrian crossings. The Patrol Police of Kyiv has already approved the traffic‑organisation scheme.
