Five years ago Khmelnytskyi and Vinnytsia oblasts were not widely associated with wine. LIGA.net reports that local winemakers have since started exporting, expanding vineyards and winning international prizes, including awards at Decanter.
Producers in Podillia are concentrating on white and sparkling wines and face typical small-producer constraints: limited advertising budgets and deliberate avoidance of mass retail. To raise the region’s profile, wineries are cooperating and preparing a geographic indication, marketed as “Wines of Podillia,” so the area — rather than single labels — can appear on the global wine map.
Kyiv Food and Wine Festival organiser Sergey Klimov is quoted calling Podillia one of Ukraine’s most promising regions for wine and tourism. Consumers and trade buyers in Kyiv should watch for growing availability of Podillia wines at festivals, specialist shops and export channels.
