A scientific and educational meeting on August 28 at the Hryhorii Skovoroda Memorial Museum in Pereiaslav commemorated the Peresopnytsia Gospel’s 470th anniversary since the start of its creation and the 465th since its completion. Academics, local historians and community representatives discussed the manuscript’s linguistic and artistic features and its historical link with Pereiaslav.
The Gospel was produced between 1556 and 1561: work began at the monastery of the Zaslavski princes near the Trinity Church in Dvirtsi and finished at the Peresopnytsia monastery in Volhynia. The manuscript itself attributes its work to protoiereus Mykhailo Vasylovych Sanotsky and the Peresopnytsia archimandrite Hryhorii.
Speakers included Marina Navalna (acting director of the National Historical and Cultural Reserve “Pereiaslav”), mayor Vyacheslav Saulko, former MP Ivan Zaets, Nataliia Yukhimenko and Taras Nagayko. The report notes the Gospel’s later history in Pereiaslav—gifted by Hetman Ivan Mazepa in 1701 and researched locally in the 19th century—and lists local facsimiles on display at the Skovoroda museum, the Museum of Shevchenko’s Testament, the Hryhorii Skovoroda University statehood corner and the mayor’s office.
