Kyiv gives Tatra T3 trams a second life with full overhaul AI

Kyiv is carrying out capital repairs on its vintage Tatra T3 trams in 2026. The third Tatra T3 this year is being rebuilt at the Darnytskyi tram depot, receiving air conditioning, modern driver controls, new interiors and passenger information systems; the work should extend service life by about ten years. Refurbished T3s will return to Kyiv routes from Darnytskyi, Podil and T. Shevchenko depots, offering cooler, better-lit cars with clearer passenger information.

Kyivpastrans is performing in-house capital repairs on Tatra T3 trams this year; the Darnytskyi tram depot is currently overhauling the third vehicle of 2026. According to the Kyiv City State Administration, the car has already undergone ultrasonic diagnostics, metalwork, welding, painting and received new electrical components and heating. Technicians are now fitting the interior ceiling, handrails and passenger seats and applying fiberglass wall panels.

The capital-repair package includes modernizing the driver’s control panel; replacing electrical equipment; upgrading heating; installing tinted windows, new steps with yellow warning stripes, new seats and handrails; adding energy-saving lighting, a passenger information system and air conditioning. City officials say the overhaul can extend each tram’s service life by about ten years. A fourth T3 is being prepared for repair, and parallel work is underway at Podil and T. Shevchenko depots.
