Kyiv to add six new ground-level pedestrian crossings at Bessarabska Square
UNN reports that six new at-grade pedestrian crossings will be installed at Bessarabska Square, duplicating the existing underground passages known as the 'Metrograd'. The plan, announced 26 August 2026, includes traffic lights, tactile strips and barrier-free routes to improve accessibility. The changes mean pedestrians will no longer have to descend into the Metrograd tunnels at a very central square, and will gain accessible, street-level crossing options.
